But who was hide and why is he so revered by many musicians and fans Hide was born as Hideto Matsumoto on December 13, 1964, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa. He started playing guitar at the age of 15, inspired by Kiss, and formed his first band Saber Tiger in 1981. He graduated from a beauty school in 1985 and obtained a beautician license. He joined X Japan, then known as X, in 1987 as their lead guitarist and soon became one of the most popular and influential members of the band. X Japan pioneered the visual kei movement, a subgenre of rock that combines elaborate costumes, makeup and hairstyles with heavy metal music. X Japan sold over 30 million records and became one of the most successful bands in Japanese history. [6]
Hide also pursued a solo career from 1993 onward, releasing six albums and two EPs that explored various genres such as alternative rock, industrial rock and electronic music. He collaborated with many artists, such as Zilch, Spread Beaver, M*A*S*S and Oblivion Dust. He also established his own record label, LEMONed, which supported many underground bands. He was known for his eccentric and flamboyant personality, his innovative and experimental music style, his social activism and his loyal fanbase. He was widely regarded as a musical genius and a cultural icon. [7]
On May 2, 1998, hide was found dead in his apartment in Tokyo, apparently from suicide by hanging. His death shocked and saddened millions of fans around the world, who mourned his loss with vigils, tributes and memorials. His funeral was attended by over 50,000 people and broadcast on national television. His posthumous album Ja,Zoo was released later that year and topped the charts.
